Why it's worth checking first

Get the quantity right before the truck arrives

Asphalt & Bitumen Civils has been laying driveways, car parks and roads across Perth for over 40 years as a family-owned contractor. One thing that hasn't changed in that time: jobs run smoother when the quantity is right from the start. Order too little hot mix and you're left with a visible joint and a second delivery; order too much and you're paying for asphalt that never goes down. This calculator uses the same length × width × thickness × density method our estimators use for a first-pass figure, so you know roughly what you're working with before you request a free quote.

Method

How the calculator works

Four simple steps turn your site measurements into a material estimate.

Work out the area

Area is length multiplied by width.

Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)

Convert to volume

Area is multiplied by thickness, with thickness converted from millimetres to metres.

Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × (Thickness mm ÷ 1000)

Apply density to get weight

Volume is multiplied by asphalt density to get total tonnage.

Weight (t) = Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³) ÷ 1000

Estimate the cost (optional)

If you enter a price per tonne, it's multiplied against total weight.

Estimated cost = Weight (t) × Price per tonne
Reference table

Roughly how far does one tonne of asphalt go?

Based on the standard trade estimate of 2,400 kg/m³. Actual coverage will shift with your mix design and compaction.

Compacted thicknessApprox. coverage per tonneTypically used for
25mm≈ 17 m²Thin overlays, patch repairs
40–50mm≈ 8.5–10 m²Residential driveways, pathways
75mm≈ 5.7 m²Light commercial areas
100mm+≈ 4.3 m² or lessCar parks, roads, heavy traffic

Exact depth depends on subgrade and expected traffic — our team confirms this on-site before quoting.

Match the job to the service

Where accurate thickness matters most

A driveway, a car park and a road all carry different loads, so they're not laid to the same spec. These are the jobs we quote most often in Perth:

Driveways

Residential-grade asphalt sized for cars and light vehicles, finished for kerb appeal.

See driveway paving →

Car parks

Commercial paving built to handle sustained traffic and repeated vehicle loading.

See car park paving →

Roads

Full-depth road construction for smooth, long-lasting traffic surfaces.

See road construction →

Pathways

Slip-resistant asphalt pathways for parks, schools and private property.

See pathway paving →

Hot spray & seal bitumen

A different process to full-depth asphalt — priced by area, not tonnage.

See spray seal bitumen →

Recycled asphalt

A cost-efficient, sustainable option for resurfacing and base layers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What density should I use if I don't know the mix design?

2,400 kg/m³ is the trade estimate commonly used for compacted hot mix asphalt, and it's a reasonable default for driveways and light commercial areas. Actual density depends on the mix and aggregate used, so treat the tonnage figure as an estimate rather than a final order quantity.

What thickness should I enter for a driveway?

Residential driveways are commonly laid around 40–50mm compacted, though the right depth depends on your subgrade and expected vehicle loads. See our driveway paving or ask our estimators to confirm the spec for your site.

Does the calculator include base preparation, labour or delivery?

No, it estimates asphalt material only. Site preparation, base material, labour and delivery are quoted separately once we understand your site conditions via a free quote request.

Is this the right tool for a bitumen spray seal job?

Not quite, this calculator is built for full-depth asphalt. Spray seal is priced by area and application rate rather than compacted volume. See our hot spray and seal bitumen page or contact us directly.

Can I use this for a car park or road resurfacing estimate?

Yes — it works for any defined area, including car parks and roads. Trafficked areas generally need a greater compacted thickness than a residential driveway, so confirm the depth with our estimators before ordering.
